Amanda Hoang

Miss Bellevue USA 2023

About Me

Breaking Barriers to Advocacy

My name is Amanda Hoang and I am proudly representing as your Miss Bellevue USA. My journey of resilience began amidst the turbulent aftermath of the Vietnam War, as my family sought refuge from political and economic unrest. While my mother was pregnant with me and learning English in a refugee camp in the Philippines, I surprised everyone by arriving a month earlier than expected--a testament to my determination even before birth. Despite my premature arrival, I quickly proved my fighting spirit, and within weeks, we found ourselves resettled in Seattle, WA thanks to sponsor family.

Growing up, I called the diverse neighborhoods of South Seattle home. Government support like housing and food banks were crucial for my family. Being biracial – Vietnamese and African American – in the 90s brought its share of challenges, from language barriers, cultural differences, and even physical appearance, yet, each obstacle only added strength and passion to giving back to the community that supported me and my family.

In high school, a forensic science class opened my eyes to the systems that were put in place to serve and protect us. Determined to be the face of representation within a system that could help people that looked like me and lived experiences like me, I studied and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice at the University of Washington Tacoma. Joining the King County Department of Public Defense as a paralegal in 2014, I've spent the last decade advocating for the indigent community. I fight for the voiceless, ensuring they're heard in a system that often overlooks them.

But my leadership reaches beyond King County. As a bargaining chair member and union steward for SEIU 925, I diligently fight for fair treatment for my colleagues. Currently, I'm preparing for negotiations for fair wages and conditions for almost 400 employees.

Even with a serious career, I spend as much time as possible finding solace in life's simple joys – spending time with my family and friends, playing with my dog Coco, traveling, and dancing at my local hip hop studio. I also co-host a podcast called 'Beyond the Beauty,' with my best friend where we challenge the glamorization from social platforms and shed light that not everything is much more than what it seems.

The Miss USA organization is breaking barriers and making history this year, and in ways mirrors the way the city of Bellevue has become a vibrant community with a commitment to diversity and inclusivity. It's a city that embraces innovation and opportunity, values that resonate deeply with me. In just the 3 months of becoming Miss Bellevue USA, I've united my community, represented my Vietnamese and BIPOC roots authentically, and inspired young dreamers to go after what they love. Age is just a number, and I'm here to prove it. With unwavering determination and a heart full of purpose, I am Miss Bellevue USA, ready to lead, serve, and leave behind a lasting legacy.
